On July 26, the Foreigh Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov took part in the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting in Rio de Janeiro.

The parties discussed the prospects for the development of strategic cooperation in the BRICS format, as well as the preparation of the XI summit of the Association which will take place the 13-14 November in Brasilia. The Brazilian side informed about the plans of its presidency in the “five” in 2019.

Sergey Lavrov highlighted the inclusion of the BRICS Energy Research Platform in the priorities of the Summit in Brazil.

We are grateful for including among the priorities of Brazil’s Presidency two Russian initiatives: to establish an Energy Research Platform and the BRICS Women Business Alliance.

In addition, the meeting considered further steps to implement the decisions taken at the 10th BRICS summit on July 25-27 in Johannesburg. The colleagues had a broader exchange of views on topical issues of the global and regional agenda, the maintenance of international peace and security.

Sergey Lavrov expressed his belief in the need for close coordination of the BRICS countries on the main international platforms, between diplomatic missions in third countries, especially in multilateral organizations, and stressed the importance of an open and trust-based dialogue.

Following the meeting, a joint communique was approved.
