FAO World Food Forum hosted a BRICS YEA partnered side-event

On October 17-21, 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) hosted its second World Food Forum Flagship event in Rome, Italy. This year’s priority «Healthy Diets — Healthy Planet» reflects the intertwined nature of the global food and environmental challenges. The event brought together UN policymakers, national representatives, business leaders, scientists, and youth delegates to take stock of the progress on transforming food systems.

In particular, the Flagship’s Youth Forum provided space for highlighting youth initiatives that spearhead positive change at the nexus of food and environmental policy. BRICS YEA was represented by Vadim Kuznetsov, Director for Sustainability and Climate Initiatives, who co-organized an expert session «From G20 to COP27: Building Consensus for Food Systems Transformation». The expert session focused on presenting key policy recommendations developed during this year’s Youth G20 under the Indonesian presidency and discussing how to amplify the work on food systems at COP27. The event’s main objective was to break the silos and bring together young people already working on food action and developing their own initiatives at the national, regional, or global level.

The session gathered G20 youth delegates from the Sustainable and Livable Planet Track, members of the World Food Forum Young Scientists Group, and World Food Forum Youth Focal Points. A specific emphasis was put on coordinating youth-led research on multidimensional aspects of food systems transformation, including adjacent issues in energy, post-consumption disposal and circularity, soil health, and climate change.
