We continue to introduce you to the developers of the BRICS Youth Energy Outlook 2019. The next team represents the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology was founded in 1956 by Karam Chand Thapar, one the great captains of Indian Industry established this institute to provide a close interaction with industry, and a strong emphasis on basic and applied research. From 1956, Thapar Institute has grown in size. Now the campus spawns over 250 acres with lush green environment.

As part of the preparation for the BRICS YEA Outlook-2019, we interviewed the team of the Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology to make you know them better.

— How did you know about the BRICS YEA and the BRICS YEA Outlook-2019?

Dr. Amandeep Singh Oberoi attended the BRICS YEA Summit-2018 at Moscow and got introduced to BRICS YEA. He was in touch with BRICS YEA thereafter and the opportunity to contribute to Outlook-2019 came through an email from the BRICS YEA.

— In your opinion why should the young people from the BRICS countries cooperate?

Youth is always foreseen as future of any country. If globally we want to see the change in the society, we believe the seed has to be sown at the youth level to reap the fruit of change later.

— Which goal should have been reached in the coming years to achieve global sustainable development in the whole world?

There are 14 Sustainable Development Goals reported in the UN Agenda 2030. We are particularly concerned about clean energy development and storage. We strongly believe that no single renewable energy source could cater to the global energy demand and neither it is sustainable to achieve the same. According to our team’s vision, combination of two or more individual renewable energy sources (or Hybrid Systems) are the need of the hour.

— How do you evaluate the role of the BRICS YEA in the achieving global sustainable development?

BRICS YEA is a wonderful platform to bring together young researchers from the BRICS countries and exchange technology/ideas/resources etc. Also, BRICS YEA could play a vital role in contributing towards formulating the energy related policy by respective governments, which in-turn, would help in meeting the UN AGENDA 2030.

— What would you like to place emphasis on during your work on the BRICS YEA Outlook-2019? Why?

Our main emphasis would be bringing awareness among the policy makers regarding the green and clean energy needs of the society. It is very important to understand that not all the clean energy sources are green and not all the green energy sources are 100% sustainable.

— In your opinion what’s the main principle that makes your teamwork successful?

We are a fully dedicated and multi-disciplinary team with varied expertise. The inspiration to work together comes from pain of the society and our zeal to make an impact to eradicate societal evils.

— What contribution to your team experience do you hope to get during your work on the BRICS YEA Outlook-2019?

While searching for the material for the BRICS YEA Outlook-2019 our team came across some vital announcements made by the government of India that otherwise would have gone missed from our attention. We believe that our angle of vision has broadened after carrying out this literature survey.
